Dear Misfits,

There is a one-liner that reads “I have made some big changes in my life…and if you haven’t heard from me lately you’re probably one of them.”  But not so!  The Misfits are still very much in my life.  I’m just way behind in my Misfit book reports and recommendations as I’ve been travelling and enjoying this wonderful summer.  I’ve also been doing a great deal of reading…so many books and so little time.  In that regard, I have just about finished Part III of the Divine Comedy and sadly must regret that I will be in Wyoming on the date of our next meeting where we are to discuss the final 17 Cantos of Paradise.   I must say, getting into Paradise is a difficult thing.  Many try but few make it!  So for those of you who are on schedule and want to discuss the final Cantos of the Divine Comedy,  the next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the Library in St. Michael’s.  The meeting as usual will begin at 7:00 pm and end at 8:30 pm.

So now what to read after the Divine Comedy?  I’m going to go out on a limb and recommend a novel that I’ve read recently by a decidedly Catholic author.  The novel is Poor Banished Children by Fiorella De Maria.  I enjoyed the story and as well as the theologically correct portrayal of the Faith.  The novel is set in the 16th Century.  It is a well-researched historical novel that “raises challenging questions about the nature of courage, free will and ultimately salvation.”  It is also a “light” read after the challenge of reading and comprehending Dante’s Commedia.  I think the Misfits will enjoy the read.  I hope we can also discuss why this will not be a classic in the larger sense of the word but is (or is not) a worthwhile novel.  The book is very recently published and available on Amazon for $13.63.  (It is $9.99 on Kindle for you non-Luddites.)  I have attached a recent review of the book by Ignatius Press.

 Warmest regards,

 Buzz
